The Whole Foods boycott and modern liberalism

Commenting on the call for a boycott of Whole Foods by liberal activists, Donald J. Boudreaux draws attention to the double standard of modern liberals when it concerns voting with one’s dollars:

How hypocritical. Persons who seek greater government control over health care proudly exercise their ability to vote with their dollars to avoid patronizing a store run by a chief executive whose opinion they dislike. Yet the very opinion that they so fiercely dislike is one that, should it be heeded, would enhance the ability of health-care consumers to vote with their dollars.

This should not be surprising. Modern liberalism is a tortuous attempt to reconcile a commitment to individual choice and the demands of egalitarianism, or less charitably, individual choice and the desire for power.
